australia launches covid-19 contact tracing application

We have been talking about the COVID-19/Coronavirus contact tracing applications that have been set to launch in the United States and France.

In the United States, Google and Apple are reportedly working together, and Franceis asking Apple to peel back some of its restrictions.

In the meantime, with the other applications set to launch in the coming weeks, Australia has launched its version as of Sunday.

This application has been downloaded over 2.4 million times since launching and uses the Bluetooth signal from your phone to track when an app user is getting closer to another.

Australian Health Authorities say that the application does not actively track your location and only monitors if your phone gets close to another. This data is supposedly only accessible by Health officials.

With the first launch of a purpose-based contact tracing application, it will be interesting to see how this continues to play out within Australia as a testing ground of sorts. Our thoughts are on what will happen when this current crisis is over, will officials still have access to this data? Or will they shut it down after?

We are constantly monitoring this in our own country and others as this directly relates to the Privacy, Security, and Health of everyone.
